Betty Brinn Children’s Museum Introduces New STEM Education Science CITY Exhibit presented by Kohl’s Cares
New exhibit offers activities designed to engage children in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education.
MILWAUKEE, WI – (June 14, 2018) On July 3rd, the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum will introduce Science CITY, a new feature exhibit dedicated to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education presented by Kohl’s Cares.
Science CITY reflects the Museum’s commitment to providing experiences that foster a child’s interest in STEM subjects that are important for academic success and help them build the 21st century skills – collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving – that will be key to living, working and learning in the future. Science CITY was designed to be part warehouse, part superstore, part clubhouse, and part laboratory, and was developed using early learning and state and national academic standards, including Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
Science CITY presents an immersive setting where children and adults explore the fundamental science principles that shape our world, showcasing that STEM is everywhere. Interactive learning stations include a giant periodic table of elements, an engineering challenge inspired by the “Three Little Pigs,” coding activities integrated into a multi-level climbing structure, hands-on examples of the six simple machines, demonstrations of “invisible forces” (magnetism, electricity, sound and air), and a repurposed flight simulator with video clips about astronomy, space travel and research. Digital installations, reading materials, displays of natural materials and graphics, presented in both English and Spanish, highlight STEM-related research, jobs and hobbies, and introduce the work of some of the most influential inventors, scientists and innovators – Edison, Einstein, Newton, and others. The area also suggests additional resources for curious, creative kids and adults who want to learn more.
“We are tremendously grateful to Kohl’s for enabling the Museum to develop Science CITY, which reflects our shared commitment to strengthening STEM education for children in our community,” said Betty Brinn Children’s Museum executive director Fern Shupeck. “The exhibit will serve as a spectacular resource for families and students, with the ability to spark a child’s interest in STEM, fostering their academic success, cultivating their skills, and creating opportunities for them to consider vocational programs and career directions that will contribute to the future of our community’s workforce development and economic goals.”
“We are honored to present Science CITY as an opportunity for Milwaukee families to explore STEM and learn together in a fun and engaging environment,” said Jen Johnson, Kohl’s senior vice president, corporate communications. “Kohl’s is proud to support the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum and its dedication to the positive development of children in our community,”
The exhibit is free with Museum admission. The Museum is open Monday – Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from noon until 5 p.m. Museum admission is $8 per person and $7 per senior (adults older than 55); children younger than 1 are free. About the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum
The Betty Brinn Children’s Museum is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational resources that promote the healthy development of children. The Museum’s mission is supported by the development of age-appropriate, hands-on exhibits and programs for children, and adult education programs that focus on early childhood brain development, learning styles, parenting skills and how the Museum environment can be used to promote a young child’s cognitive, emotional, social and physical growth. The Museum’s Maker Initiatives were established in 2013 to expand the organization’s core learning-by-doing mission to the larger community through year-round maker programs at the Museum, community outreach, the annual presentation of Maker Faire® Milwaukee, and the establishment of its off-site maker hub, Brinn Labs, in 2018.
