Kohl’s Achieves A- CDP Ranking on 2021 Climate Change Response
Kohl’s is proud to be awarded CDP’s A- ranking. This is the third consecutive year we have been recognized at the CDP’s Leadership Level, demonstrating a significant acknowledgment of our continued commitment to climate action.
CDP is widely recognized as the gold standard of corporate environmental transparency and helps to guide, incentivize and assess environmental action. In 2021, a record-breaking 13,000+ companies disclosed through CDP.
“We are proud to be recognized as a leader in climate action by the CDP for the third consecutive year,” Steve Thomas, Kohl’s chief risk & compliance officer. “With such a large retail footprint, it’s important for Kohl’s to implement sustainable solutions our customers and associates can feel good about. As Kohl’s prioritizes long-term sustainability across every sector we do business in, we look forward to continuing our commitment to climate action.”
How We Support Climate Action
In conjunction with our ESG strategy as part of our strategic framework, we have been committed to managing climate risks and have been taking action for over a decade. Here are a few ways we support climate action:
CDP: Since 2007, Kohl’s has disclosed emissions data to CDP. Our CDP Climate Change response includes detailed information on our strategy and performance. Kohl’s leverages insights from the CDP to measure, manage and understand environmental impacts, and in turn, its insights empower investors and companies to make the right choices today that work for people and the planet in the long term.
American Business Act Pledge on Climate Change: We demonstrated our support for action on climate change and for The Paris Agreement by signing the American Business Act Pledge on Climate Change in 2015.
Climate Action Goals: We set emission goals through our CDP reporting and in 2019 we announced our goals publicly. Kohl's climate action goals are focused on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, reduction of energy use, and the increase of renewable energy use. Goal 1: Reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Kohl’s-owned operations by 50% by 2025. Goal 2: Reduce energy consumption by 30% at Kohl’s facilities by 2025.
Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi): Through SBTi, we have committed to aligning our greenhouse gas reduction targets with climate science and the core commitment of the Paris Agreement. We will work with SBTi to set our new science-based emission reduction targets.
Renewable Energy: With more than 50 megawatts of solar energy installed, we are among the leading retailers who are increasingly turning to solar to power their operations. We currently host 163 solar arrays around the country, totaling more than 200,000 solar panels and nine solar trees. Additionally, there are two wind turbines installed at our Findlay, Ohio distribution center.
As a purpose-led organization, ESG stewardship will continue to be an integral piece of Kohl’s culture and an important component of the company's strategic vision to be the most trusted retailer of choice for the active and casual lifestyle.
In addition to CDP, Kohl’s has been recognized through a variety of climate action awards and partnerships, including those listed below.
