Meet Salina Yoon, the Author and Illustrator behind the Summer Kohl’s Cares Collection
Summer is a time for new adventures and a new book can help spark a child’s imagination. The new Kohl’s Cares collection features children’s books by talented author and illustrator Salina Yoon. Each piece of the Kohl’s Cares collection is priced at $5, with 100 percent of the net profit benefiting children’s health initiatives nationwide. The stories are captivating — and so is the artist behind them. Read on to get to know Salina Yoon better.

What inspired you to become an author and an illustrator?
"I started off as a book designer and art director for a small children’s book publishing company. I did not write or illustrate books, but worked closely with those who did. It was there that I found my passion for children’s books and dreamed of writing and illustrating my own books one day."

What is the favorite part of your job and why?
"My favorite part of my job has to be connecting with children at schools. I’m actually shy by nature, and I often feel anxious as an event approaches, but it always turns out to be the highlight of my week or month. It brings me tremendous joy and inspiration to meet young, enthusiastic readers—especially ones that hug me at the end!"
What was your reaction when you learned your books would be included in the Summer Kohl’s Cares collection?
"I screamed! And I cried. Then I ran upstairs to tell my husband and kids the news. I don’t think they knew exactly what I was saying, but from my reaction, they knew it was a big deal and were happy to celebrate with me! I will never forget that moment."
Which one of your books is your favorite and why?
"FOUND is one of my favorites because my younger son inspired the character of Bear. My son treasured his stuffed animals, and one in particular, a handmade bear that his grandmother made him. My character Bear treasures his stuffed bunny, Floppy. I think many children can relate to a love for a special toy. FOUND celebrates a child’s love in its purest form."

What is your favorite thing to shop for at Kohl’s?
"I enjoy buying clothes for my kids at Kohl’s, and browsing the women’s section for new items. But I will always go out of my way to look at the current collection from Kohl’s Cares and stock up on books and plush for future gifts. This will be the first time that I get to stock up on my own books from Kohl’s!"
