Psst: Here’s a Sneak Peek of our New Concept Store in Tacoma, WA!

Kohl’s is continuing to invest in store strategies with new store format tests, service pilots, merchandising adjustments and more.

To test and learn about new ideas and store experiences, we are opening an exciting new concept store in Tacoma, Washington, in November 2022. Unlike any other Kohl’s store, this location will showcase new ways we are innovating for the customer and delivering a more localized, modernized and inspiring shopping experience. Thanks to data science, our teams are creating a Kohl’s store unique to the Tacoma market with new experiences, local touches, and merchandise assortments that cater to what we’re seeing and hearing from the local community.

“As Kohl’s continues to evolve its flexible store strategy, we’re excited to introduce new store concepts, like Tacoma, and features that will deliver a customized experience that meets our customers where they are,” said Mark Griepentrog, Kohl’s chief property officer. “We are going to use the new store as an opportunity to test, learn and inform as we continue to scale and drive long-term real estate growth.”

In addition to localized assortments, the overall look and feel of our Tacoma location will showcase a new and modern Kohl’s. Polished concrete will replace carpet, new modern fixtures will bring in a sleek feel, and branding will show up differently throughout the store. Customers will also find new product vignettes that tell stories across departments and brands with elevated, and diverse mannequins, offering shopping inspiration and engagement.

“Specifically, in Tacoma, we’ve created an experience catered toward this community. We’re leaning into inspiration and storytelling with lifestyle-led curations across brands and categories for an outdoor, active lifestyle,” said Nancy Carruth, Kohl’s executive vice president, brand strategy, creative & experience design. “Our goal is to provide a solution-oriented layout that guides customers through the store and helps them find what they are looking for.”

In May, Kohl’s announced its commitment to the store experience with a flexible store strategy and plans to open approximately 100 new small-format stores over the next several years in markets currently untapped by existing Kohl’s stores. Some of the elements in Tacoma could also be found in future small-format stores, showing up differently as we customize the store experience.

These are just a few of the exciting features to expect in Tacoma. Check back closer to its November opening for additional details and our Grand Opening date!
