Kohl’s Customers Help Drive Sustainability

12/14/2018

From recycling to utilizing EV charging, Kohl’s offers a variety of steps customers can take to support sustainable solutions.

At Kohl’s, sustainability is proudly woven into our company purpose and culture. We have committed to pursue sustainable solutions by reducing waste, conserving energy and reducing our environmental footprint throughout our operations. Kohl’s is proud to have been recently named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index which recognizes Kohl’s sustainability efforts. Other recognitions include: EPA ENERGY STAR, EPA WasteWise, EPA SmartWay, EPA Green Power, Green Masters Award, and the USGBC LEED programs.

Leaving a smaller footprint is not just good for business, it’s good for the communities we serve. However, we can’t do this alone. Collaboration with our customers helps to drive change and reduce our environmental impact even further. Here are a few easy ways customers can help support sustainable solutions.

Giving Plastic a Second Life
Plastic is in many items our customers use daily, however, according to the National Park Service, it can take up to 450 years for just one water bottle to decompose, creating a negative impact on our environment. The good news is that plastic shopping bags are not only reusable but also recyclable, and Kohl’s provides convenient opportunities for all customers to recycle these items.

With drop-off bins located near the front of every one of our more than 1,100 stores nationwide, it’s now easier than ever for customers to help the environment while shopping at Kohl’s. We accept plastic film packing, shopping bags, bread bags, ziplock bags, and dry-cleaning bags. As a result of these programs, Kohl’s has recycled more than seven million pounds of plastic film, bags and wrap from shipping, store operations and customers in 2017.

Going Paperless
To create a more sustainable environment by saving paper, Kohl’s encourages our customers to receive their credit statements digitally. In fact, since 2014, Kohl’s has issued more than 150 million electronic credit card statements to Kohl’s Charge cardholders — meaning more than a quarter of our credit statements are delivered electronically! Kohl’s customers may follow the instructions here to learn more about choosing paperless credit statements. To further their sustainable impact, customers may also request an e-receipt next time they shop in-store.

Plugging In at Our EV Charging Stations
We’ve put Kohl’s on the map — the electric vehicle charging map that is. According to the International Energy Agency, the numbers of EV cars on the road surpassed three million worldwide in 2017. In order to keep up with the rapidly growing trend, Kohl’s is doing its part to expand the national network of EV charging stations.

Currently, drivers can find 216 electric vehicle charging stations at 96 Kohl’s locations in 22 states. Over the past year, these stations were utilized for almost 50,000 charging sessions, which, according to the EPA, provided more than 540,000 miles to EV drivers and kept almost 25,000 gallons of gasoline emissions out of our air. As the demand for EV charging grows, Kohl’s continues to explore EV charging opportunities for its customers to create a more sustainable tomorrow.
